The refurbishment of smartphones: A rapidly growing industry

The smartphone refurbishment market is booming, and companies like Certideal perfectly illustrate this trend. Specializing in refurbishment, Certideal has reached a revenue of €100 million thanks to a business model based on sustainability and reducing environmental impact.

An ecological and economic alternative

Refurbishing smartphones addresses two major issues: electronic waste management and access to high-performance devices at lower costs. Each year, approximately 50 million metric tons of electronic waste are generated worldwide, with a significant portion coming from smartphones. Through refurbishment, these devices can be repaired and resold with performance levels equivalent to new models. This process plays a major role in the circular economy by extending product lifespans, reducing the demand for raw materials, and lowering carbon emissions associated with manufacturing new devices.

A growing trend

Certideal, with its presence in seven European countries, demonstrates that demand for refurbished smartphones is continuously increasing. According to a study by Counterpoint Research, the refurbished market grew by 15% in 2023, while the new smartphone market stagnated. The company has diversified its offerings and implemented strict quality standards to ensure consumers receive a product as reliable as a new one. This emerging sector is expanding particularly in countries like France, where consumers are increasingly aware of ecological and economic challenges.

The environmental impact of refurbishment

By reusing pre-owned smartphones, the production of new devices is reduced, consequently limiting the excessive consumption of natural resources. The manufacturing of a new smartphone generates an average of 187 pounds (85 kg) of CO2 emissions and requires the extraction of 75 pounds (34 kg) of raw materials. In comparison, refurbishment emits only 18 pounds (8 kg) of CO2 and requires less than 11 pounds (5 kg) of raw materials.

A solution for everyone

Refurbishment is not just an economic choice for consumers; it is also a responsible action that allows everyone to contribute to reducing environmental impact. Purchasing a refurbished smartphone not only benefits the planet but also supports a rapidly growing industry that creates numerous jobs.

Final thoughts

Smartphone refurbishment is more than just a trend. This shift marks a turning point where ecological and economic concerns converge. Companies like Certideal are leading the way, proving that innovation can align with responsibility to shape the future of the technology sector.
